Unless you know the answers to these questions you wont be able to plan the best way to promote your site, who you want to promote it to and the results you want to gain from your efforts!!
Any good search engine marketing company will want to know the answers to these before they can plan a campaign for you so make sure you have the answers asap!
What is the overall objective of your website?
Who do you want to market your site to? What type of visitors do you want coming to your site? There may be more than one but you should know who they are!
What are your key selling points / buzz words for your products or services?
What words would your customers use to search for your products / services online? They many not necessarily be using industry jargon you may use!
Which are the competitors you want to compete with online? Know who they are, how their sites work and what you like or dislike about their sites.
What offline marketing initiatives will you be employing over the next 12 months? Anything you do online should be in tandem with any offline promotion.
Is your market seasonal? How could this effect any promotions you do online?
What are the areas / products / services on your site you particularly want to promote?
Do you have proper tracking of the activity on your site set up? Without it how will you know how well you are doing?
Do you have the resources available to make changes to your website to gain the positioning you need? A full search marketing campaign may require redesign elements, new content, video, audio etc – are you prepared for that to make it work?
These are certainly not the ONLY questions you need to ask yourself but should give you a good basis on which to plan the direction of any promotion methods you employ. It would certainly make your search marketing agencies life alot easier!
