MSN Ranking Update

After checking clients’ rankings yesterday, I noticed significant drops in rankings on MSN Live Search. After investigating this further, it appears that MSN Live Search has had a major update in the last week or two which it describes as the “biggest update since our debut in January 2005

The features of this update include enhanced speed, word handling, auto spell correction, layout and usability of the interface and yes… enhanced ranking algorithms

In fact the Live Search update has seen their index quadruple to 4 times the size it previously was. This has no doubt impacted search engine rankings and will introduce new competition to climb up MSN’s search results.

I would be interested to see if anyone has seen a similar drop in rankings on MSN Live Search?

  1. Hi hagay

There are a few things that you should initially be thinking about.

Firstly, you should research your target market, research what your competitors are doing and how they are promoting their websites. With this in mind, you should be thinking about what sort of keywords your target market are likely to be searching for.

You should then make sure that these relevant keywords appear within your page copy and your should write page relevant meta tags for each page. By doing this, search engines are likely to rank you higher for these terms.

In terms of your websites ( and, they both contain the same content which search engines will see as duplicate content and are likely to just index one version. Some useful information on duplicate content can be found here

Another important thing you should be active about is increasing your link popularity (by link building strategies). Search engines, particularly Google, place a large amount of weight on the number of quality, relevant inbound links a site when it comes to ranking a website. A link from a site that is highly relevant and complimentary to your business will not only pass quality and relevant traffic to the site but will aid your search engine rankings.

    I hope this helps 🙂
